Back to blogging

Well hello! It is lovely to be back after a much longer break than intended from blogging, to say the least! Client work, building the business and working on rather than in it, more study and creating a podcast well, it inconveniently got in the way. But here I am again, ready to go!

Sticking to the script

This week a very good business pal and I have been sharing our daily accountability together at the beginning and the end of each work day. It started out as an experiment to see if it would help. I have done this on a weekly basis within a female community for a while now (shout out to my CEW ladies) so I had been aware of the science behind it and the results – for example the more precise you can be about when you will achieve the goal, the more likely you are to see it through.  However what I’ve found this week though is by doing this daily it has super charged the results for me and given me a sense of shared-purpose, company and a reminder to celebrate the wins too.  It has felt very stretchy for the comfort zone – nowhere to hide! It also confirmed for me that I find it hard to say I just didn’t stick to the script going freestyle and that in itself propels me to do the thing.

All of the balls

Looking back over the week I’ve found it interesting to see that I’ve accomplished all but one or two of the tasks I committed to over the week (4-5 daily) *just* by having the support and accountability.  However, what I’ve learnt this week is that having the support and perspective of another close enough to get you and all of the balls you are juggling is huge!  It is helpful to help zoom out since most of us tend to focus on the things we have not completed rather than what we have started or accomplished in a day, including dealing with all of the curve balls that weren’t on said to-to list in the first place.  Some days the odds are just stacked against us and that’s par for the course, we can gracefully accept that and try again with fresh energy tomorrow.

A theme I regularly see with clients, mums and business owners is that there is rarely anyone to remind them of all the plates they are spinning and just how GREAT a job they are doing, and I think it is so very important to take time to recognise this both in ourselves and in others just because and not just on the run-up to IWD26!

A blast from the past

I came across a blog recently which was a blast from the past, I’d forgotten even writing it. It felt fitting to weave in here, a blog within a blog, if you like.  The blog may be old but the underlying message is one which hasn’t changed at all. The ‘puppy’  turned two last year (someone needs to tell her!). She still loves to tell me if she thinks I’ve spent too long working which forces me out in the fresh air, no bad thing.

Since there will always be firsts, regardless of where we are in life, I decided to honor past me for taking the time to write my first (intended) blog post by posting it as my first-in-a-while blog instead.

Firsts

Yesterday I published my very first (both first ever and first business) Instagram post. I know, where have I been, right?! Lurking and taking it all in is where! In truth its actually been great to step into putting myself out there, although it feels incredibly slow and frustrating.

Today was also my first coaching session since completing my second financial coaching certification through (the wonderful) Wise Monkey Coaching which was something I’d long-admired, it has allowed me to incorporate a greater variety of tools and resources as a result.

Today was also the day to record and post a video to introduce myself within a new community that I joined for networking, support and accountability.

All in between wrangling a puppy for several hours, meaning lots of stopping and starting and completing tasks over a longer time frame than I’d have liked.

By reframing firsts, these can be viewed as exciting rather than daunting. The mindset of choosing to view the butterflies as a sign of excitement and stepping out of comfort zones rather than allowing it to throw us into a loop of nervousness.

What I have come to realise is that as soon as we have done that much anticipated and perhaps put-off ‘first’ we quickly pass it by and may not even stop to think too much about it or to pat ourselves on the back.

Now with this new found revelation, on to my next ‘first’ – there is certainly no shortage of them.

I know I have at least one thing on my list weekly at the moment (sometimes daily) that I appear to tell myself I’ve ‘no time’ for. However on closer consideration there is often a big element of procrastination involved! I find timing myself on these type of tasks funny as often they are the shortest tasks, proving it’s not about time at all! [Edited March 26 my record this week was 2 min 26 for a phonecall I’d been putting off!].

So moving on to you, what could you do with some support on that you’ve found yourself  putting off lately?

Take a moment and let that simmer.

If you instinctively think ‘nothing’, I’d encourage you to give it some more thought. We all have at least one thing, likely several at any one time.

➡️ Then get curious about what lies beneath.

🤔 What is the biggest feeling/thought when you think about doing this particular task/job?

📝 You might like to journal or doodle around this thought….

Consider : Does this help to separate the task from the emotions we’re perhaps allowing to get caught up in the task?

If this resonates or you’d like some encouragement, accountability or a big cheer once done, share it in the comments below.

Maybe you’d like to give the accountabiliy idea a whirl by teaming up with a friend for increased commitment?
